CCTV News (News Network): The reporter learned from the National Forestry and Grassland Administration on June 17 that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, our country has continuously increased its efforts to prevent and control desertification and achieved remarkable results.
The latest data shows that during the "14th Five-Year Plan" period, our country continued to strengthen comprehensive prevention and control of desertification, and completed the treatment of 152 million acres of desertified land and 29.32 million acres of rocky desertified land. The degree of desertification across the country continued to reduce, and the ecological conditions of sandy areas continued to improve.
The "Three Norths" region is the main battlefield for my country's desertification prevention and control. Currently, the sixth phase of the "Three Norths" project has arranged construction tasks of 463 million acres and completed 355 million acres, basically achieving the stage goal of more than half of the time and half of the tasks.At present, the "Three North" region is continuously strengthening its technological empowerment, dividing 136 ecological management zones, and breeding a number of new drought-resistant, cold-resistant, salt-alkali and forest and grass varieties. The utilization rate of improved varieties in the project area exceeds 75%.
Up to now, the area of desertified land in my country has continued to decrease netly, from an average annual expansion of 5.15 million acres at the end of the last century to the current average annual shrinkage of 10 million acres. The total amount of soil wind erosion in eight deserts and four sandy lands has dropped by about 40% compared with 2000. The average vegetation coverage in sandy areas has reached 21.17%, an increase of 2.84% from 10 years ago.Today, China’s experience in desertification control is going abroad and continues to contribute China’s strength to global ecological governance.
