Xinhua News Agency, Taipei (Reporters Wang Chenghao, Zhou Wenqi) Chinese Kuomintang Chairman Cheng Li-wen said at a seminar in Taipei on the 7th that from 2008 to 2016, on the basis of the "1992 Consensus", the two sides of the Taiwan Strait had frequent exchanges and ushered in "spring." Facts have proved that the "1992 Consensus" can bring about the easing of cross-strait tensions and peaceful exchanges. The Kuomintang will firmly continue on the right line and become an active and key peacemaker.
The Ma Ying-jeou Foundation and the Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Exchange Association co-sponsored a seminar with the theme of the 10th anniversary of the historic meeting between cross-strait leaders and was held in Taipei on the 7th. In her speech, Cheng Lai-wen said that in a peaceful cross-strait environment, Taiwan's development space can be opened up and its economy and trade can be more dynamic. Only through cross-strait exchanges can we move towards a better future. On the contrary, wrong cross-strait policies will put Taiwan into the most unfavorable situation.
Xia Liyan, president of the Cross-Strait Economic, Trade and Cultural Exchange Association, said that after 2008, mutual trust between the two sides gradually accumulated on the basis of the "1992 Consensus" and opposition to "Taiwan independence", which naturally led to the historic meeting of cross-strait leaders. Now the DPP authorities are unwilling to accept the "1992 Consensus," causing the two sides to lose the political basis for dialogue.
Experts and scholars participating in the meeting said that the DPP authorities adhere to the "Taiwan independence" stance and "anti-China" mentality, resulting in the current lack of formal communication channels between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, and bringing Taiwan into a dangerous situation of war and war, which is undesirable for the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. We hope that the DPP authorities will assume their due responsibilities and consider the peace across the Taiwan Strait and the vital interests of the Taiwanese people.
Former Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou posted a message on social platforms that day, explaining the significance of the historic meeting between cross-strait leaders and its far-reaching impact on cross-strait relations. He said that after the DPP authorities came to power, they proposed a policy of "resisting China and protecting Taiwan" that was not in the interests of the Taiwanese people and was not accepted by mainstream public opinion, which led to a downturn in cross-strait relations and almost interrupted exchanges. Lai Ching-te went even further and published the "new two-nation theory" and "hostile foreign forces" theory, further pushing cross-Strait relations to the bottom. He called on Lai Ching-te to step back from the brink and return to the common political foundation of both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
