CCTV News: According to the website of the Ministry of Emergency Management, recently, the Office of the National Disaster Prevention, Reduction and Relief Committee, together with relevant member units, conducted a consultation and analysis on the national natural disaster situation in January 2025. In January, natural disasters in my country were mainly earthquake disasters, and drought, low-temperature freezing and snow disasters, wind and hail disasters, forest fires, etc. also occurred to varying degrees. Various natural disasters have caused 287,000 people to be affected to varying degrees, 142,000 people were urgently evacuated and resettled, 126 people died, 26,900 houses collapsed, more than 220,000 houses were damaged, and the crops were affected by 44,000 hectares, and direct economic losses of 9.28 billion yuan.

The main characteristics of natural disasters in the country in January are:

1. The earthquake disaster losses were severe. The 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Tingri, Tibet caused major casualties. In January, 31 earthquakes of magnitude 4.0 or above occurred in mainland my country, and earthquake disasters caused 216,000 people to be affected to varying degrees. 142,000 people were urgently relocated and resettled, 126 people died, 27,000 houses collapsed, 220,000 houses were damaged, and direct economic losses of 9.2 billion yuan were lost. The maximum magnitude was the 6.8-magnitude earthquake in Dingri County, Shigatse City, Tibet on January 7. The focal depth was 10 kilometers and the maximum intensity reached 9 degrees, causing about 26 kilometers of surface rupture zones. The earthquake area was concentrated in some areas and the seismic resistance performance of houses was weak. As of the end of January, 200,000 people in seven counties including Dingri, Lazi, Sakya, and Dingjie in Shigatse City were affected to varying degrees. 139,000 people were urgently evacuated and resettled, 126 people died, 26,900 houses collapsed, 215,000 houses were damaged, and direct economic losses of 8.945 billion yuan were directly affected. The magnitude 4.9 earthquake in Hongyuan County, Aba Prefecture, Sichuan Province caused damage to more than 500 houses.

2. The losses of low-temperature freezing and snow disasters are light, and wind and hail disasters occur sporadically in the southwest region

In January, three cold air processes affected my country. Except for central Xinjiang, central and southern Yunnan, Fujian, central and northern Heilongjiang and other places, the temperature in most areas of the country is 1 to 4℃ higher than the same period in the same period last year. The losses of low-temperature freezing and snow disasters in the country are light, causing 36,000 people to be affected to varying degrees in 10 provinces (autonomous regions and municipalities) including Fujian, Yunnan, and Guizhou. The area of crops is 3.8,000 hectares, and the direct economic loss is nearly 63 million yuan. Compared with the average of the same period in the past five years, the number of people affected, the area of crops affected, and direct economic losses have all decreased by more than 90%. From the 23rd to the 27th, affected by the cold wave, large-scale cooling occurred in most parts of my country from west to east. The temperature in the northern region and Jiangnan, Yunnan and other places generally dropped by 8 to 12℃, and the drop in some areas exceeded 16℃. The rain and snow process in some areas is strong in central Shaanxi, Henan, northern Hubei, and central and northern Anhui. In addition, in January, affected by the effects of cold air and other factors, local wind and hail disasters occurred in Yunnan, Guizhou, Tibet and other places, causing nearly 1,000 people to be affected to varying degrees, with more than 20 hectares of crops, and direct economic losses of nearly 1 million yuan.

3. The drought in Guangxi, Jiangxi and Zhejiang emerged, and the overall situation of major rivers in the country was stable

In January, the national average precipitation was 9 mm, which was 37.4% less than the same period last year. Among them, the precipitation in the western and eastern regions was less, and the central regions were more. The water storage capacity of 9,520 key reservoirs across the country is nearly 10% higher than that of the same period last year, and the soil moisture conditions across the country are generally suitable. The overall drought situation in the country is lighter. The drought situation in Guangxi, Jiangxi and Zhejiang has emerged, causing 34,000 people to suffer from varying degrees, and 31,000 people need living assistance due to drought (mainly distributed in the hilly areas of Guangxi). The crops are affected by nearly 600 hectares, and the direct economic loss is 3 million yuan. As of the end of January, the main stream of the Yellow River was 726.5 kilometers, and the four major rivers and 18 medium rivers in Heilongjiang Province were frozen in the entire line. The overall situation was stable and no dangerous situations were caused.

4. The overall situation of forest and grassland fires was stable

In January, there were 30 forest fires nationwide, including 5 in Jiangxi, 4 in Hubei, 3 in Zhejiang, Henan, Guangdong, and Shaanxi, 2 in Fujian and Guangxi, and 1 in Jiangsu, Anhui, Chongqing, Tibet and Ningxia, causing no casualties; no grassland fires occurred nationwide.
