On April 8, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian presided over a regular press conference. A reporter asked, on April 7, Eastern Time, Trump announced that if China does not cancel the 34% retaliatory tariff, it will impose an additional 50% tariff on China. What is China’s comment on this?
Lin Jian said that the US abuse of tariffs has seriously infringed on the legitimate rights and interests of all countries, seriously violated the rules of the World Trade Organization, seriously damaged the rules-based multilateral trading system, and seriously impacted the stability of the global economic order. It is a typical unilateralism, protectionism, and economic bullying, which has been widely opposed by the international community. China strongly condemns this and firmly opposes it.
I want to emphasize again that there are no winners in trade wars and tariff wars, and there is no way out for protectionism. The Chinese do not cause trouble, nor are they afraid of trouble. Pressure, threats and blackmail are not the correct way to deal with China. China will take necessary measures to resolutely safeguard its legitimate rights and interests. If the United States ignores the interests of the two countries and the international community and insists on fighting a tariff war and a trade war, China will definitely accompany it to the end.
