On March 18, 2025, Wang Yi, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and director of the Central Foreign Affairs Office, spoke on the phone with the French President's foreign affairs adviser Bona.
Wang Yi asked Bona to convey President Xi Jinping’s greetings to President Macron. Wang Yi said that the current international situation is more chaotic and intertwined, and uncertainty and instability have increased significantly. This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory of World War II. As permanent members of the UN Security Council and a comprehensive strategic partner, China and France are very necessary to strengthen strategic communication at this important historical juncture. China is willing to maintain close high-level exchanges with France, strengthen strategic cooperation, jointly safeguard true multilateralism, safeguard the status of the United Nations, maintain the international trade order, maintain the stability of the global industrial chain and supply chain, oppose unipolar bullying, oppose putting a country's personal interests above the common interests of all countries, and cannot allow the world to return to the law of the jungle. Under the current circumstances, it is of great and positive significance for China and Europe to resolve specific economic and trade frictions through consultation. We hope that France and China will work together to send positive signals of unity and cooperation, and promote the healthy and stable development of China-France relations and China-EU relations.
Bona conveyed President Macron's cordial greetings to President Xi Jinping, expressing that the French side attaches great importance to and cherishes the friendship and mutual trust between France and China, especially in the current complex international situation. The French side looks forward to maintaining high-level exchanges with China, maintaining close strategic communication, and jointly resisting camp confrontation. France opposes the fight against trade wars and tariff wars, and is willing to properly resolve economic and trade frictions with China through consultations, promote the balanced and sustainable development of economic and trade relations between France and China and Europe, and maintain the international economic and trade system based on World Trade Rules.
The two sides exchanged in-depth views on the Ukrainian issue. Bona introduced the French side's position and expressed his willingness to strengthen cooperation with China and hoped that China would play an important role in reaching a fair, stable and sustainable peace agreement.
Wang Yi said that China has advocated resolving the crisis through dialogue and negotiation from the beginning, and is happy to see all efforts to a ceasefire, which is a necessary step toward a peace. At the same time, this process should respect the wishes of the parties, and should not be imposed by a third party, nor should it only serve the interests of a certain country. China supports the conclusion of a fair, lasting, binding and accepted by the parties, and believes that all parties and stakeholders should participate in the peace talks in a timely manner. China's position has been recognized and supported by the parties involved and most countries. China is willing to continue to make efforts for peace with all parties, including Europe.
The two sides also exchanged views on the Iranian nuclear issue.
