Xinhua News Agency, Taipei, August 2 (Reporters Huang Yang, Chu Mengmeng) More than 20 civil society organizations, including the Taiwan Workers’ Party, the Taiwan Political Victims Mutual Aid Association, and the Cross-Strait Peace and Development Forum, recently issued a joint statement solemnly protesting the abuse of power by the Democratic Progressive Party authorities in calling for the dissolution of the China Unification Promotion Party.
The statement pointed out that this move is a dangerous signal that the DPP abuses its power machinery to suppress dissidents and carry out political trials.Various groups issued a joint statement to protest, demanding that the internal affairs department of the Taiwan authorities immediately withdraw their petition for dissolution.
Liu Shifang, the head of the Taiwan authorities’ internal affairs department, recently held a press conference and announced that he expected to formally submit a petition to the Taiwan Constitutional Tribunal in early August. On the grounds that many core members of the unified party violated the island’s laws and regulations, he claimed that the political party endangers the so-called “national security” and requested for forced dissolution.
A statement issued by the reunification group on the 2nd pointed out that advocating for the peaceful development of cross-strait relations and national reunification is a political proposition that complies with the constitutional provisions of Taiwan. The DPP authorities stigmatized the pro-unification group as an agent of foreign forces due to political differences, which is a complete abuse of power. The relevant actions of the Taiwan authorities’ internal affairs department are to use “green terror” authoritarian thinking to suppress dissidents.
The statement calls on all sectors of society to jointly oppose judicial persecution. The statement stated that the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations is related to the livelihood of Taiwan's grassroots people, and normal cross-Strait exchange activities among the people should not be easily smeared. The Democratic Progressive Party authorities have repeatedly resorted to "resisting China and protecting Taiwan" to manipulate opposition, which is essentially covering up the crisis of people's livelihood on the island. It is hoped that the DPP authorities will stop political manipulation and focus on solving social and people's livelihood problems.
The statement put forward demands such as "adhering to the bottom line of 'promoting the law of unification and advocating for unification without guilt'", "requiring the immediate withdrawal of the dissolution petition", "rejecting confrontation and division, and focusing on the livelihood of the grassroots".
Twenty-six Taiwanese civil organizations, including the reunification political party, labor associations, cultural foundations, media organizations, and youth organizations, participated in the joint signature. Victims of the white terror politics as well as scholars, commentators, and social activists signed in support.
