CCTV News: According to the National Bureau of Statistics, the results of the fifth national economic census show that the number of operating entities in my country's tertiary industry has increased significantly, the overall scale has expanded, and the quality of development has improved, becoming an important force in driving economic growth and promoting full employment. In 2023, the added value of the tertiary industry accounted for 56.3% of GDP, an increase of 2.2 percentage points from 2018.

1. The number of units in the tertiary industry increased significantly

At the end of 2023, there were 26.383 million legal entities engaged in tertiary industry activities in the country, an increase of 9.222 million from the end of 2018 (the fourth national economic census year), an increase of 53.7%. There were 29.119 million industrial activity units, an increase of 9.41 million, an increase of 47.7%. There were 79.12 million self-employed households, an increase of 23.484 million, an increase of 42.2%.

By industry, the top three units are: wholesale and retail, leasing and business services, scientific research and technical services, and the proportion of units in the tertiary industry legal entities is 38.6%, 17.5% and 8.0% respectively. Compared with the end of 2018, the proportion of legal entities in the leasing and business services industry, the proportion of legal entities in the information transmission, software and information technology services industry increased by 2.6 and 1.0 percentage points respectively.

2. The proportion of employees in the tertiary industry exceeded 60%. At the end of 2023, there were 428.984 million employees in the secondary and tertiary industry legal entities nationwide, an increase of 45.748 million from the end of 2018, an increase of 11.9%. Among them, there were 264.689 million employees in the tertiary industry, accounting for 61.7% of all employees in the secondary and tertiary industries, an increase of 54.012 million, an increase of 25.6%.

Among the tertiary industry legal entities, the four industries where employees account for more than 10.0% of the tertiary industry are: 53.258 million people in wholesale and retail, accounting for 20.1%; 39.066 million people in leasing and business services, accounting for 14.8%; 27.811 million people in public management, social security and social organizations, accounting for 10.5%; 26.77 million people in education, accounting for 10.1%. The four industries have a total of 146.905 million people, accounting for 55.5% of all employees in the tertiary industry.

3. The scale of the tertiary industry has steadily increased

At the end of 2023, the total assets of the tertiary industry legal person units in the country were 118.70 trillion yuan, accounting for 82.5% of the secondary and tertiary industries, 1.5 and 8.6 percentage points higher than the end of 2018 and the end of 2013, respectively; an increase of 446.5 trillion yuan, an increase of 60.3%, and its contribution rate to the total assets of the tertiary industry legal person units in the country reached 85.1%.

In 2023, the national tertiary industry corporate legal entities achieved operating income of 253.8 trillion yuan, accounting for 57.3% of the secondary and tertiary industries, 6.1 and 11.4 percentage points higher than in 2018 and 2013 respectively; an increase of 103.0 trillion yuan compared with 2018, an increase of 68.3%, and its contribution rate to the growth of operating income of legal entities in secondary and tertiary industries across the country reached 69.6%.

4. The growth of emerging services is strong, and the traditional service industry is developing steadily. In 2023, the operating income of information transmission, software and information technology services, scientific research and technical services in emerging services increased by 117.0%, 92.5% and 88.1% respectively compared with 2018, which is significantly higher than the growth rate of operating income of legal entities in the tertiary industry enterprises; the number of employees increased by 51.4%, 53.0% and 72.5% respectively compared with the end of 2018, and the total number of new people accounted for 49.6% of the number of new people in the tertiary industry, providing strong support for accelerating the formation of new quality productivity.

In 2023, the operating income of wholesale and retail industries, accommodation and catering industries in traditional services increased by 74.5%, 63.5% and 56.0% respectively compared with 2018. The total contribution rate of the three industries to the growth of operating income of legal person units in the tertiary industry enterprises reached 69.3%; the number of employees increased by 32.9%, 26.5% and 11.3% respectively compared with the end of 2018. The total number of new people accounted for 30.8% of the number of new people in the tertiary industry.

5. Development and growth of key areas

At the end of 2023, there were 62,000 large-scale service industry enterprises and legal entities engaged in strategic emerging industry activities nationwide. Among them, there are 25,000 new generation information technology industries, accounting for 40.7% of the corporate entities of strategic emerging service industry enterprises above a certain scale; there are 16,000 digital creative industries, accounting for 26.5%. In 2023, the legal entity units of strategic emerging service industry enterprises above a certain scale achieved operating income of 148,2025 billion yuan in the whole year, an increase of 505,787 billion yuan over 2018, an increase of 51.8%.

At the end of 2023, there were 65,000 high-tech service enterprises and legal entities in the country. Among them, there are 30,000 information services, accounting for 46.2% of the legal entities of high-tech service enterprises and above scale; there are 15,000 high-tech services in professional and technical services, accounting for 23.2%. In 2023, the legal entities of high-tech service industry enterprises above a certain scale achieved operating income of 15719.56 billion yuan in the whole year, an increase of 101.5% over 2018.
