Why hasn’t New Year’s Eve been on New Year’s Eve for five consecutive years? Will it affect New Year's Eve?
2025-04-27 source:China Voice of China

Today is the 27th day of the twelfth lunar month. It is not too early to pay a visit to the early years, especially New Year's Eve is not three days later, but the day after tomorrow. This year's thirty-year lunar month is not directly connected to the first day of the twelfth lunar month. Not only is there no thirty years this year, but it has not been around for five consecutive years, but it will be 2030 on New Year’s Eve. Why does this phenomenon occur? Without New Year’s Eve, will the customs of New Year’s Eve be affected?

Why is there no

First of all, the 29th and 30th day of the twelfth lunar month and the first and second day of the first lunar month both refer to the lunar calendar. A month in the lunar calendar is mainly defined by the changes in the moon's round and waning. The ancients called the day when the moon was completely invisible as the first day of the lunar calendar, and called it "Shuo", and the day when the moon was full at around the fifteenth was called "Wang". One day after another and then the next one, it is the complete month of the lunar calendar.

However, the relative movement of the sun, earth and moon is not the hour, minute and second hands of the watch. It is impossible to make up artificially defined integers. Modern astronomy has calculated that the entire moon phase change period is about 29.5306 days, which is about 29 days, 12 hours and 44 minutes. However, in actual production and life, it is impossible for people to turn a calendar together at 12:44 noon, and it cannot be forced to become the next day at noon. Therefore, a month in the lunar calendar can only be either 29 days, which is the small month; or 30 days, which is the big month. The big and small months are not arranged in a regular manner, and need to be determined through precise calculations. If the twelfth lunar month catches up with the small month, it will be 29 days, and there will be no New Year's Eve. Although it is not particularly common to not have thirty for five consecutive years, it is also a normal phenomenon.

Why is there no

This actually answers the second question raised at the beginning. The last day of the lunar year is New Year's Eve. As for whether New Year’s Eve is the 29th day of the twelfth lunar month, whether it is based on the custom of 29th or New Year’s Eve, it is actually not a problem at all.
