The Ministry of Water Resources held a press conference on January 22. The relevant person in charge said that by 2030, a number of happy rivers and lakes will be built with the focus of "mother rivers" in various places.
Zhu Chengqing, deputy minister of the Ministry of Water Resources, said that the advantages of the river and lake chief system should be fully utilized, and the basin should be used as the unit to coordinate water disasters, water resources, water ecology, water environment, water culture and coastline protection, the harm of water control, the benefits of water use, and the beauty of water. By 2030, a number of happy rivers and lakes will be built with the focus of "mother rivers" in various places.
Zhu Chengqing introduced that since 2022, the Ministry of Water Resources and the Ministry of Finance have selected 62 (individual) rivers and lakes across the country to implement the Happy River and Lake Construction Project. At the same time, organize the formulation of technical standards for assessing happy rivers and lakes and other measures to promote the construction process in an orderly manner. At the basin level, seven major basins, including the Yangtze River, the Yellow River, and the Huai River, have all deployed and promoted the construction of happy rivers and lakes in the basin through the provincial-level river and lake chief joint meeting. At the local level, 31 provinces across the country have deployed the construction of happy rivers and lakes through provincial river chief orders and other means.
Zhu Chengqing also stated that in the next step, the Ministry of Water Resources will guide all localities to give full play to the key role of the river and lake chief system, improve the working mechanism for the construction of happy rivers and lakes, and continuously improve the ecological environment of rivers and lakes by promoting the construction of happy rivers and lakes, and promote the transformation of rivers and lakes and lakes into development advantages and economic advantages.
