Don't let "graduates from prestigious schools enter primary and secondary schools" become a gimmick
2025-04-23 source:China Youth Daily

According to media reports, recently, the list of recruitment of fresh high-level outstanding graduates in 2025 released by Suzhou Middle School in Jiangsu Province has attracted widespread attention. Among the 13 recruits, there were 6 from Tsinghua University, 4 from Peking University, 8 from PhDs and 5 from Masters, and none of them came from normal school majors.

In recent years, it is not uncommon for graduates from prestigious universities to teach in primary and secondary schools. They not only appear in big cities such as Shenzhen, Beijing, and Hangzhou, but also tend to expand to second-tier and third-tier cities. For example, in 2021, Ordos, located in the western inland, once had an annual salary of 600,000 yuan to recruit graduates from Tsinghua and Peking University as primary and secondary school teachers.

This phenomenon has repeatedly become the focus of social discussion, and ultimately, it comes from two major questions in people's hearts.

First, is it a waste of talents for graduates from prestigious universities to teach in primary and secondary schools?

Objectively speaking, it is indeed a lot of positive significance for graduates with high education and high school halos to devote themselves to primary and secondary education. Especially with the rapid development of science and technology and the rapid development of knowledge iteration, these students from top universities have a deep academic accumulation and a frontier perspective. Their joining is like injecting live water from the source, bringing innovative vitality to primary and secondary schools' teaching. This is also the embodiment of the optimal allocation of educational resources. The flow of high-quality talents to basic education is conducive to the overall improvement of the level of primary and secondary education, providing more potential students to higher education, and forming a virtuous cycle of educational development.

In addition, teaching by example is greater than teaching by words. The growth experience and academic attitude of graduates with high education and backgrounds in prestigious schools are good examples for primary and secondary school students, especially in today's urgent need for top innovative talents in our country. The subtle influence of these teachers may allow more innovations to "break out of the ground".

Secondly, can graduates from prestigious universities successfully transform into famous teachers?

It is said that "famous teachers produce high disciples", but can graduates from high-education and prestigious universities become "famous teachers" by entering the teaching staff?

Not necessarily.

Education is a major that cannot be managed by a high degree of education alone. Education is not only a transmission of knowledge, but also a kind of emotional exchange and shaping of values. In addition to mastering subject knowledge, an excellent teacher also needs to master professional knowledge in systems such as education and psychology, and be well versed in the laws of youth growth, and also needs to have good teacher ethics and educational sentiment. A doctor of mathematics may not necessarily become an excellent mathematics teacher in primary and secondary schools. If you cannot guide students in an easy-to-understand manner and interact well with students in classrooms, then even if you are full of knowledge, you may "hit a wall" on the three-foot podium.

In order to solve this problem, the country has also issued relevant policies. The 2023 "Opinions of the Ministry of Education on Implementing the National Training Plan for Excellent Primary and Secondary School Teachers" proposes that from 2023, the state will support high-level universities represented by "Double First-Class" to select students with excellent professional grades and enjoy teaching as graduate students of the "National Excellence Program". While strengthening the study of subject and professional courses, systematically study teacher education module courses with no less than 26 credits. Through the "National Excellence Program", graduate students are trained to attract outstanding talents to teach, and provide primary and secondary schools with a group of outstanding teachers with deep educational sentiment, excellent professional qualities and solid teaching skills.

There is another problem that should not be underestimated. "Famous schools" and "high education" cannot be made into publicity gimmicks for some schools. If "Famous schools" and "high education" become important yardsticks for the selection of teachers in primary and secondary schools, the "Famous schools theory" may turn away some normal graduates who truly love education and have undergone professional normal training.

Educator and senior professor at Beijing Normal University Gu Mingyuan has mentioned many times that if you want to engage in the profession of teacher, you must first have love. "No love, there is no education." You must love the cause of education, love children, and put children first.

According to such standards, love must be ahead of the education and the halo of a prestigious school. After all, children's growth requires not only knowledge, but also love, patience and companionship. Just like the sunshine, air, and moisture required for seedlings to grow, it is impossible to lack anything.

Therefore, education must return to its true nature, and select talents with "tailoring" the halo and high education of famous schools are certainly impressive, but "the one that suits are the best."
