CCTV News: The reporter learned from the Ministry of Commerce on May 6 that during this year's May Day holiday, the national consumer market was booming and active, sales of automobiles, home appliances, and mobile phones grew rapidly, and consumption demand for catering, cultural and tourism services such as strong.

In terms of consumption promotion activities, the Ministry of Commerce, together with relevant departments, held the 2025 International Consumption Season and the 6th "Five Five Shopping Festival" and the 7th "Double Product Online Shopping Festival". All localities will highlight local characteristics in accordance with the overall arrangement of the "Shopping in China" activity, highlight local characteristics and carry out rich and colorful consumption promotion activities. During the May Day holiday, the passenger flow of 50 pedestrian streets and business districts monitored by the Ministry of Commerce increased by 6.4% year-on-year, and the passenger flow of shopping centers in 36 large and medium-sized cities monitored by relevant platforms increased by 6.5% year-on-year.

In terms of old-for-new trade-in, from the beginning of 2025 to May 5, the number of applications for old-for-new subsidies for cars exceeded 3.01 million; consumers purchased 56.02 million units of 12 major household appliances, purchased mobile phones, tablets, and smart watches (bracelets), and purchased more than 5 million units of new subsidies for electric bicycles. During the May Day holiday, the number of applications for old-for-new subsidies for cars exceeded 70,000; consumers purchased 4.42 million units of 12 major household appliances, purchased mobile phones, tablets, and smart watches (bracelets) to purchase 2.94 million new subsidies for electric bicycles, and sold old and new products.

The catering and cultural tourism market is booming. Data from the relevant platform shows that the turnover of holiday accommodation increased by about 13% year-on-year. Domestic travel has grown rapidly. During the May Day holiday, 314 million domestic travelers nationwide, an increase of 6.4% year-on-year; the total cost of domestic tourists traveled was 180.269 billion yuan, an increase of 8.0% year-on-year. Inbound travel has increased significantly. Data from relevant platforms show that the sales of inbound travel during holidays have increased by about 90% year-on-year.
New consumption momentum is strong. According to business big data monitoring, the national online retail sales of physical goods increased by 8.2% during the holidays, and digital, green and national trend products became highlights. The online sales scale of digital products continued to grow, among which smart home products grew by 24.1%; the concept of green and health drove the online sales of organic food to grow by more than 70%, and the national style and national trend promoted the growth of new Chinese pastries and national trend creative gifts on key monitoring platforms by 66.2% and 35.2%.
Tax data: Consumption demand was strong during the May Day holiday and the growth was good
The latest value-added tax invoice data of the State Administration of Taxation shows that during the May Day holiday, the national consumption-related industries' sales revenue increased by 15.2% year-on-year, and consumption demand was strong, and the growth was good. Driven by the "old for new" policy, during the May Day holiday, sales revenue of household appliances and audio-visual equipment increased by 167.5% year-on-year, consumer electronic products such as smartphones were included in the scope of new purchase subsidies, sales revenue of communication equipment increased by 118% year-on-year, and sales revenue of furniture increased by 1.7 times year-on-year.

At the same time, during the May Day holiday, online Internet retail and offline department store retail increased by 34.7% and 34.5% year-on-year respectively, and the popularity of online and offline consumption increased simultaneously, providing consumers with more diversified consumption scenarios.

In addition, experiential tourism service consumption continues to be favored. During the May Day holiday, the sales revenue of scenic spots and leisure and tourism services increased by 42.7% and 65.6% year-on-year respectively; the sales revenue of homestay services, literary creation and performance services maintained a double-digit growth.
