CCTV News: On May 6, the China Geological Survey of the Ministry of Natural Resources officially launched my country's first marine glacier aviation exploration in Tibet to grasp the development laws and ablation changes of marine glaciers and provide basic data support for natural resource management.

The Renlongba Glacier is a famous marine glacier in Tibet. It still maintains its original natural state, mysterious and ancient, and is a valuable resource for ecological research and geological survey. The first marine glacier aerial exploration in my country kicks off here.

Marine glaciers refer to natural ice bodies that exist on the surface of polar or alpine areas for many years and have a state of motion along the ground. The main distribution areas are concentrated in areas controlled and affected by the marine wet airflow. These areas have abundant precipitation, with annual precipitation above 1,000 mm, providing sufficient material conditions for glaciers. Moreover, the temperature of marine glaciers is relatively high.

Marine glaciers have a variable climate, are usually located in high-altitude areas, have complex terrain and difficult to obtain data, so they have always been one of the most difficult things in glacier surveys. This marine glacier aviation exploration will use the latest technology and equipment to master the development laws and ablation changes of my country's marine glaciers.

Marine glaciers are a precious solid freshwater resource. In this marine glacier survey, the first item is to calculate the reserves of solid ice and find out the "family" of the glaciers. At the same time, marine glaciers are very sensitive to global climate change and are also important players in global water circulation and climate regulation. By detecting marine glaciers, we can better understand the processes and trends of global climate change and provide a scientific basis for responding to climate change.
