Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station Reservoir Area completed its first water storage

On May 1, the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station Reservoir Area completed its first water storage, marking an important step towards its start of production.

Shuangjiangkou, as the name suggests, is formed by the convergence of two tributaries. Look upstream of the hydropower station, that is, to the west: the one on the left is called the Chosjia River, and the one on the right is the Jiaomuzu River. The two rivers have abundant water. After they merge together, they will provide a abundant source of water for the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station and can continuously emit clean green electricity.

This blue water surface is the reservoir area where the first water storage has just been completed. The depth of this first round of water storage is more than 90 meters, but according to the plan, by 2027, it will be raised by more than 150 meters above the current water level. By then, the water surface of the entire reservoir area will be more open. Staff told reporters that the water storage capacity here has reached 110 million cubic meters, equivalent to the water volume of nearly 8 West Lakes.

The first completion of water storage is of great significance to a hydropower station, which means it can quickly use the accumulated water to generate electricity. In just under 20 days, the water level rose by 80 meters, which is a huge challenge to the quality and construction technology of the dam.

The construction site in the distance is the dam under construction. Its design height is 315 meters and it is the highest dam in the world. It has now been built to 205 meters, and will be built 110 meters upwards in the future. Such a world-class dam has a total amount of earth and stone filling of more than 46 million cubic meters. If these earth and stones are built into a wall of one meter square, they can circle the equator of the earth.

Hundreds of construction machinery are busy shuttle operations at the dam surface operation site. If viewed from the side profile, this dam is a trapezoid with a large bottom and a small top, with an astonishing thickness of 1,400 meters. When it reaches the top, the thickness is only 16 meters. Such a structure can make the dam body stronger and effectively disperse the huge pressure of incoming water upstream.

If this dam is compared to a "sandwich biscuit", the yellow soil part is the middle layer. It is the heart wall of the dam. Unlike the huge stones on the outer layer of the dam, this heart wall is made of clay and gravel in a certain proportion of mixing and crushing, and is the "heart" of the dam's waterproof and seepage-proof system. If the function of the dam outside the dam is mainly to provide support, the heart wall truly plays a waterproof and anti-seepage role.

Many people will intuitively link it directly with power generation, but in fact, the water flow that really generates power is invisible, and that part of the water flow flows through the underground generator set factory. This part of the water flow is excess water from the upstream, mainly to provide the ecological flow of the downstream rivers without interruption. Especially during the flood season, it can also play a role in flood discharge to ensure the safety of the dam. The reporter learned that at present, the filling of the dam of the Shuangjiangkou hub project and the installation of the factory unit are sprinting towards the target of power generation of the first unit this year. After the power station is completed and put into production, the annual power generation exceeds 7 billion kWh. Since Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station is a controlled reservoir project in the upper reaches of the Dadu River, it can also help multiple cascade power stations in the downstream to issue an additional 6.6 billion kWh of electricity, which can meet the annual electricity consumption needs of 3.26 million households. According to the staff, by the end of this year, the Shuangjiangkou Hydropower Station will achieve the first unit generation.
