Xinhua News Agency, Beijing, February 14 (Reporter Hu Lu) In order to better protect ancient trees and famous trees, my country will launch the third census of ancient trees and famous trees resources starting this year.
This is what the reporter learned from a press conference held by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration on the 14th.
"The Regulations on the Protection of Ancient Trees and Famous Trees issued in January this year stipulate that the National Greening Committee organizes a national census of ancient trees and famous trees every 10 years. It has been 10 years since the second census was launched, and it is time to launch the third census from this year." Liu Lili, deputy director of the Department of Ecological Protection and Restoration of the National Forestry and Grassland Administration (Office of the National Greening Committee), said that the regulations require strengthening hierarchical management. For ancient and famous trees of different ages, more targeted protection measures are stipulated on the basis of comprehensive protection, which puts forward higher requirements for the accuracy and comprehensiveness of resource base information. It is necessary to improve the resource database through the third census to facilitate refined management.
Liu Lili said that the second census of ancient trees and famous trees did not cover the original stands and nature reserves in state-owned forest areas. In fact, a large number of forests in these areas are ancient trees and famous trees. New technical means such as satellite remote sensing should be fully utilized to master the resource status of these areas and classify them in the form of ancient trees for overall protection. This will be further strengthened in the third census of ancient trees and famous trees.
In the next step, the State Forestry and Grassland Administration will work with relevant departments to formulate a census work plan, revise and improve the technical specifications for census appraisal, and strive to complete the third census in three years and release the census results to the public in a timely manner.
