2025-05-01 source:CCTV News

Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Guo Jiakun presided over the regular press conference held today (February 14). A reporter asked: US President Trump said he plans to meet with Chinese and Russian leaders to discuss issues such as nuclear weapons. What does the spokesperson have to say about this?

Guo Jiakun said that the United States and Russia are recognized worldwide as having more than 90% of the world's nuclear weapons, and nuclear disarmament must follow the basic principles of maintaining global strategic stability and the security of various countries without deterioration. As countries with the largest nuclear arsenal, the United States and Russia should earnestly fulfill their special priority responsibilities for nuclear disarmament, further significantly and substantially reduce their nuclear arsenals, and create the necessary conditions for other nuclear-weapon countries to join the nuclear disarmament process. The international community has long agreed on this.

Guo Jiakun pointed out that Chinese-style modernization is the modernization of the path of peaceful development. China pursues a policy of not first using nuclear weapons, adheres to the self-defense and defense nuclear strategy, always maintains its own nuclear power at the lowest level needed by national security, and does not engage in arms races with any country. China is willing to work with all parties to firmly support the multilateral arms control mechanism with the United Nations at its core and contribute to the maintenance of international peace and security.
