CCTV News: In order to meet the demand for fully launching high-speed rail EMU trains, Shanghai South Station will start the upgrade and renovation project from July 1, 2024. On January 5, with the implementation of new train operation maps by national railways, Shanghai South Station officially entered the "high-speed rail era".

A CCTV reporter from the Central Station introduced in an on-site interview at Shanghai South Station that from 0:00 on January 5, 2025, the Yangtze River Delta Railway will implement the first quarter train operation map. After this adjustment of the map, the Shanghai South Station, which has been in use for 18 years, has been transferred to the newly opened "Shanghai-Suzhou-Hangzhou High-speed Railway" line not long ago, officially entering the high-speed railway era. The G1305 train behind the reporter will also become the first high-speed train departing from Shanghai South Station.

The Shanghai South Station, which has entered the "high-speed rail era", not only provides surrounding residents with more convenient and faster travel options, but will also further deepen the connection of the Yangtze River Delta region. After the map adjustment, Shanghai South Station plans to launch 118.5 pairs of trains, an increase of 31.7% from the previous period, of which high-speed rail accounts for 60%, mainly covering short distances such as Hangzhou, Ningbo, Wenzhou, and Huangshan, as well as medium and long-distance directions such as Xiamen, Nanchang, Zhengzhou, and Changsha. In addition, Shanghai South Station has added two new ring train products, "one big and one small". The "big ring" G8387 train ends at Shanghai Hongqiao Station, passing through popular tourist areas such as Huzhou, Qiandaohu, and Huangshan; the "small ring" G8981 train ends at Shanghai Station, passing through cities such as Suzhou, Huzhou, Xuancheng, and Wuhu, providing passengers with more diversified travel experiences.

After the upgrade, Shanghai South Station will also play a greater role during the 2025 Spring Festival travel rush. Lu Hongmei, deputy director of the Shanghai South Passenger Workshop of Shanghai Shanghai Station, introduced that after the implementation of the new map, the capacity of Shanghai South Station has increased significantly, and the average daily passenger flow is expected to reach 50,000, an increase of 40% over the past. During the 2025 Spring Festival travel rush, Shanghai South Station is expected to have an average daily passenger flow of 70,000. The launch of Shanghai South Station's high-speed trains can greatly reduce the passenger flow pressure at Shanghai Station and Shanghai Hongqiao Station.
