The reporter learned from a press conference held by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration on the 14th that this year, my country will carry out the third national census of ancient trees and famous trees. In recent years, my country's understanding and protection of ancient and famous trees has been deepened.

Shuipine is a national first-class key wild protected plant. It has a low seed germination rate under natural conditions and is in an extremely dangerous state. Since the beginning of winter, staff from the Chenzhou Forestry Science Institute in Hunan have been busy inspecting the growth status and various data of more than 2,000 water pine seedlings in the botanical garden and daily management. These water pine seedlings were bred by staff after picking seeds from old water pine in Zhoumensi Town, Zixing City, Chenzhou.

In order to explore the causes of endangered wild pine and study the protection of this tree species, the Chenzhou Forestry Research Institute carried out reproduction technology research and moved 10 mu of land to protect the Nanling Botanical Garden in Chenzhou.

Through collection and screening, Chenzhou explores the breeding and cultivation technology for rapid cultivation of young ancient trees. From 2013 to 2023, it has successfully introduced from 535 rare tree species. At present, the national Class I protected plants of the local surviving rare seedlings include 8 species of pine, metasequoia, yew, etc., and 27 national Class II protected plants.

Zhou Zhiyuan, director of the Resources Office of the Forestry Science Institute of Chenzhou City, Hunan Province and senior forestry engineer, said: "Implementing the breeding and cultivation of young ancient trees can not only maintain ecological balance and ensure their life course, but also provide a source of materials for the selection and breeding of new varieties. It is an effective means for the protection and utilization of relics and endangered ancient trees."

Propagation of ancient trees makes the "green treasure" flourish and leaves

In addition to implementing the breeding and cultivation of young ancient trees, some places also strictly implement the protection and management responsibilities of ancient trees and famous trees, and protect the green "living fossils" by implementing precise protection measures such as "one tree, one file", "one tree, one member", and "one tree, one policy".

In Guxian Village, Yongfeng County, Jiangxi Province, a 300-year-old ancient camphor tree has lush branches and leaves. A few years ago, the roots of this ancient camphor tree were sealed with cement, causing withering and necrosis. In order to save the ancient tree, the local forestry department promptly included it as the protected tree, and now it is revitalized.

According to statistics, there are 1,820 ancient trees and famous trees in Yongfeng County. At present, 47 ancient trees have been successfully restored, and 87 ancient trees growing on hardened ground have been rectified and treated. The local area has also purchased commercial insurance for 1,820 ancient trees and famous trees.
