China’s new power grid is “fully charged” for a better life

CCTV news: As my country’s energy green and low-carbon transformation continues to advance, the country’s renewable energy installed capacity accounts for more than 60% of my country’s total installed capacity. The scale of green power is getting bigger and bigger, but it also poses a problem to the operation of urban power grids.Let’s take a look at the reporters’ front-line research.

If half of the "Three Gorges" grows out of the roof, can the power grid handle it?

In a manufacturing base in Ningbo, Zhejiang, the smart production lines downstairs are operating at full capacity, and part of the electricity used for production comes from the photovoltaic panels on the roof.If the scattered photovoltaics in Ningbo were put together, the area would be the size of 5,000 standard football fields, and the installed capacity would exceed 10 million kilowatts, which is equivalent to "growing" half of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station on the roof.

So, why are so many photovoltaics built on the roof?

Ma Ji, Director of the Second Electrical Appliance Factory of the Kitchen Appliances Division of Zhejiang Ningbo Fangtai Kitchenware Co., Ltd., said that companies can save tens of millions (yuan) in energy costs every year. We can connect the unused electricity to the grid and generate benefits, which is equivalent to building another production line for the company on the roof.

However, when a large number of photovoltaic panels are integrated into the power grid, how should the power grid respond to this "stress test"?At the Ningbo Power Supply Command Center, the reporter witnessed an emergency situation during the interview.

Staff said that in the past, the power grid was like a "one-way street." The electricity generated by the power plant was sent to users, and the current only went in one direction.But now, the unused electricity generated by thousands of rooftop photovoltaics flows back into the power grid, and the transmission lines have changed from "one-way streets" to "two-way lanes."The resulting voltage fluctuations may burn down people's household appliances and even scrap entire batches of products on precision manufacturing production lines.

Technical breakthroughs allow thousands of green electricity to play a "symphony";

Aiming at the gaps in key technologies, electric power researchers are continuing to tackle tough problems.They installed a device similar to a "panoramic camera" on the city's power grid to convert information such as power flow direction and line load into an intuitive power tide diagram.Massive meteorological data has also been "installed" into the power dispatching system, and the increase or decrease in photovoltaic power generation can be calculated in advance, allowing the system to automatically provide dispatching plans.

As a major electricity consumer, Zhejiang has 14 sources of electricity, including traditional thermal power and local new energy. About one-third of the electricity is transmitted thousands of miles from the western region.

Power grid planners collect more than 20,000 pieces of data scattered across government departments, power supply companies and power grids and "feed" it to the simulation platform, relying on the platform's 20,000 deduction speeds per second to come up with the optimal solution.
